Scrunchie convert

For starters, where did this craze come from?!?! When people first started wearing scrunchies I must admit I was incredibly sceptical - memories of painful primary school ponytails didn't exactly make me want to scuttle off to get my mitts on one. In general, I've watched this trend with bemusement, baffled as to why so many girls my age (plus high profile celebrities such as Cressida Bonas and Pixie Lott) wanted to emulate Madonna circa 1985. Passing through Topshop a couple of months ago I spied a pretty nondescript black and white striped scrunchie going for only £2. On impulse I grabbed it, reasoning that as I was already going to spend £60+ in there, what difference would £2 make?

I love it. Initial scepticism forgotten, WHY DID SCRUNCHIES EVER GO OUT OF FASHION?! The kitsch, retro vibe that they add to any outfit is adorable and workable for a day-to-day look. And, a definite plus in my book is that they are absolutely ideal for a scruffy ponytail (a la Cressida Bonas) so you can look halfway decent when leaving home with minimal effort made.

Harper's Bazaar recently described the scrunchie as an "unsophisticated accessory" and although harsh, I see their point. It's not exactly a red carpet accessory but for the average person like you and me, our level of sophistication probably isn't quite on Harper's level so where's the harm in indulging in a little nostalgia?
